Overview of the eventA spectacular event in which the students of Year 9 took part, the rocket challenge was the result of collaboration between Physics and Business Studies students. The competition was organized in order to test the skills of the students, under the patronage of Mr. Raymond Barboza and Mrs. Rashi Bhatia (Heads of the Physics Department).
The students were asked to form groups of four and design their very own rocket using materials as simple as 2.5litre soft drink bottles, masking tape, hot glue guns, modeling clay and decorations of their choice. The aim was to construct the rocket using synchronized aerodynamics so that it would fly the longest distance. Over a period of two days the students worked tediously in perfect harmony, their tremendous efforts giving rise to an impressive fleet of rockets, which were to compete on the last day of collaboration, 17th of March. |

A quick tip to the participants
As the students nervously huddled in the school games field, making last-minute changes to their rockets, the instructions were passed around by teachers. After a demonstration of the rocket made by the team that had won the rocket challenge at Emirates Aviation College, students geared up to launch their own rockets. While some walked away from their launch with huge smiles and others drooped down in despair, it was exhilirating for most students to watch their handiwork being put to the test. After all, it’s all about the wonderful experience we gain from such events. We only get better with time, don’t we?
Record holders!
As for the fortunate winners, their rocket’s launch was truly a sight to behold. This talented group was from Year 9C, and consisted of Azza Rashid, Muhammad Al-Majid, Omar Saud Khalid, Talha Ahmed Zia and Vidun Weerasinghe. They stole the spotlight with their trusty rocket, which covered a whopping 48.1m, further than any other rocket made by Year 9 students. This group has a good chance of being sent for the EAC Rocket Making Competition next year. And, needless to say, they deserve it. As for the others, they are eagerly waiting for yet another event like this. |
